Context:

Instrument is a Portland-based diverse group of designers, strategists, engineers, and copywriters who create incredible products for brands all over the world. They helped the world’s most progressive brands solve problems, seize opportunities, and create lasting growth for their business. During COVID I had the pleasure of working remotely both as a contractor and a full time employee. I worked on large projects for Diageo, Facebook, Instagram, Sonos and Levis.

Process and Methodology:
  • Design Sprints: After a thorough discovery process with new clients, I would conduct and work through sprints with several designers as we worked through diverse design directions for the same problem.
  • Presentations: I clearly presented and articulated design directions to clients explaining and defending design decision. I would tailor information towards the attending audience in order to best represent our ideas and scope.
  • Internal Branding: Instrument works with some of the largest brands in the world. In order to secure these contracts they must show how adept they are in their craft. I worked on multiple decks to display our design process contributing to the $750,000 in new business my team acquired that year.
My Role:

Collaboration with several other designers daily was customary at Instrument. I also had the pleasure of working cross-functionally with engineers and project managers to deliver on the client's vision.

Meta Business Suite - Case Study

Context

Before joining Meta full time, I worked at Instrument, a design agency that partnered with Meta on several high visibility projects including landing pages for COVID updates, Skate Ghana, and the debut of Horizon Worlds. One of the most ambitious collaborations was the creation of a design system to support the launch of Meta Business Suite, a platform visited by 187 million businesses annually.

The challenge was significant. Meta wanted to make economic opportunity more accessible for small businesses while also streamlining campaign management for large advertisers and agencies. The project spanned the entire advertiser journey on Facebook’s platform, from onboarding to campaign optimization.

Our Goal

The goal was to help small businesses feel confident making a long term investment in Facebook Ads, while giving large businesses and agencies quick takeaways and efficient tools to manage campaigns at scale.

My Role

I joined the Meta Business Suite project in its later stages, contributing as both a Product Designer and a bridge to development. One of my key responsibilities was annotating the design system with detailed redlines. Every component, margin, and interaction was documented to remove ambiguity, ensuring the engineering team fully understood how to bring the system to life.

Another part of my contribution was converting design concepts into auto layout. This work gave the design system flexibility and ensured consistency across a range of use cases, which was essential given the scale and complexity of Meta Business Suite.

I also collaborated with a talented motion designer to define animation styles and interaction patterns. Together we described the behavior of sliders, buttons, and transitions, creating a cohesive motion language that gave the product a sense of clarity and polish.

Finally, I consulted with senior designers to refine design decisions and align our work with Meta’s broader design language. This collaboration ensured the system was not only functional but also fit seamlessly into Meta’s ecosystem. My experience managing development teams allowed me to act as a liaison between design and engineering, making sure handoffs were clear, intentional, and actionable.

Results

The handoff I created gave engineers a comprehensive, fully documented blueprint for building Meta Business Suite. This reduced ambiguity, sped up collaboration, and provided confidence in the design-to-build process. The engineering team successfully launched Meta Business Suite in under four months, a timeline that would not have been possible without the clarity and precision of the annotated design system.
